Visiting the Butchart Garden in Victoria BC was an unexpected life highlight last week. It is considered the best garden in the world. If you differ please leave the name of your suggestions in the comments so we all can explore your favorite. In the ninth and tenth photo from the top (red flowers featured) a hummingbird bird even made the photos.
The fountain was built and programmed in 1964. How about that Las Vegas ?
The rose garden was in peak form and I got a walk through the arbor without a huge crowd and even a little song from some kids.
About a million people visit each year and even though there is lots of angling for great photos the visitors are hushed and reverent. The beauty, the scent, the impeccably kept beds are overwhelming. I had a physical response of calm, lowered BP even in the midst of a complicated travel day. It was so soothing and a visual feast. Jaw dropping gorgeousness. After a partial walk through, my senses needed a reboot to absorb any more, the sensation similar to overwhelming news as in –I have to sit down for a minute -was constant after a few minutes. Thank goodness for a pause for good gelato and the gift shop !
I did 2 walk throughs for a total of 4 hours. My normal attention span for museums etc is just over an hour and my brain generally is full. The visit was just extraordinary in all ways. The garden had a concert that night as well as a nightly illumination. The best fish taco in Canada was calling back in town along with the deluxe Grand Pacific hotel so the night visit will have to wait until next time.
The garden is about a 30 min drive from town so as always I met two new best pals driving the cab.
The above plaque gives a bit of the history. How did they get things to grow on the side of the quarry ?
Canada is calling and you must go.
IN THE WORLD AT LARGE,
PEOPLE ARE REWARDED OR PUNISHED IN WAYS THAT ARE UTTERLY RANDOM.
IN THE GARDEN, CAUSE AND EFFECT, LABOR AND REWARD ARE RE-COUPLED.
GARDENING MAKES SENSE IN A SENSELESS WORLD. BY EXTENSION THEN, THE MORE GARDENS IN THE WORLD, THE MORE JUSTICE, THE MORE SENSE IS CREATED.

These original “flower power” images make my nose want to poke right through the screen here to “smell the roses.”
Glad you didn’t just “run by” this wonderful garden.
